Grief & Bereavement Counseling

We all have experienced loss and some losses we can handle and others set us off on a spiral we cannot control.  When the heaviness of a loss is too much to bear and the traditional support is not helping, meeting with a trained expert in Grief and Bereavement can help.  Grief is your feelings surrounding the loss, the vast complex emotions can include anger, guilt, sadness, to name a few.  Bereavement can also be called mourning which is the outward response to that grief.  Bereavement or mourning can include crying, wailing, fatigue, disorientation to name just a few. Grief can be complicated and crippling.

The process of adapting to a loss can dramatically change from person to person, depending on his or her background, beliefs, relationship to the lost, and other factors.

Common symptoms of grief can be physical, emotional or social.

A few common symptoms in these categories are:

Physical

  • Crying and sighing
  • Headaches
  • Loss of appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

Emotional

  • Feelings of sadness and yearning
  • Feelings of worry or anger
  • Feelings of frustration, guilt or regret

Social

  • Feeling detached from others
  • Self-isolation from social contact
  • Behaving in ways that are not normal for you

Every grieving experience is different. A person may be able to continue their day-to-day routine after one loss, yet not be able to get out of bed after the loss of someone or something else.  Having supportive friends and family are one piece of the healing but receiving skilled, professional counseling can reduce and relieve the symptoms.  Whatever your personal symptoms are, grief and bereavement counseling have been proven to help.
